When you think about Burlington, you can almost immediately bring to mind pictures of brick buildings, brick roads, and brick alleyways. The Heritage Hill Historic District is home to thousands of these bricks. The Purington Brick Company out of East Galesburg, IL created the richly colored bricks from blue shale and yellow soil, making more than 150,000 bricks per day back in its prime. These coal-fired bricks were extremely hard and durable, lasting hundreds of years! Those sturdy bricks are why the Heritage Hill Historic District bricks still shine their reds, oranges, and purples today.
