The word "Glick's" in simple tile design sits in front of the storefront property of 213-215 Jefferson St. I was intrigued one day as I stared at it, because I had never heard of the store before. Reading the State Historical Society of Iowa's Site Inventory Form for this building, I found a treasure trove of information. The historic name for this building, now owned by Farmers and Merchants Building Corporation since 1966, is Eklund's Ready to Wear in the Ransom Block of downtown Burlington. E.M. Glick & Company opened at 215 Jefferson St in 1910, and was a premier ladies ready-to-wear clothing shop. Glick's expanded to 213 Jefferson in the 1920s, occupying a double-storefront space. The Great Depression deeply effected business, and Carson's Credit Clothing Company was listed at this address from the 1930s-1950s. Downtown Burlington is full of history if you stop to look around and do a little research!
